OPEN Cycle is a Swiss company founded by Gerard Vroomen who co-founded Cervelo, and Andy Kessler the former CEO of the BMC bike brand. OPEN is a small boutique brand building just two models, the Gravel Plus and their super lightweight 890g hardtail 29’er - the OPEN One+. The idea behind OPEN Cycle is simple: To stay small and make better bikes.
Everyone is designing a gravel bike these days - this one is better, and does much more. This frame is incredibly fun to ride - the numerous fire roads in Japan are perfect for the OPEN U.P. - big tires and a mix of dirt, gravel and tarmac. What a bike.
The OPEN Cycle U.P. Gravel Plus frame is a high-end performance oriented frame designed for gravel racing, cyclo-cross and adventure single track riding. And it has clearance for 700 x 42mm CX wheels or 650B MTB 2.1 inch wheels (road geometry with mountain bike tires!).
Want to do a bit of single-track/adventure riding and camping one day and then a gravel race the next day? No problem. Simply change your wheel set, not your bike. That’s why it’s called ‘Gravel Plus’. As a bonus the geometry stays nearly identical on this do-it-all frame set. Genius.
OPEN says it is designed "so you can ride any terrain, and ride fast." Is it that good? Fast? You bet. And amazingly fun to ride. So much fun that I bought one for myself.

By dropping the drive-side chainstay OPEN created nearly double the space, allowing it to be wider and stiffer, narrower Q-factor cranks can be fitted on the 386EVO bottom bracket, and the chainstays are a short 420mm all while still keeping room for a mountain bike tire.
Frame Geometry and Design
OPEN have designed the seat tube angle to be used with a straight zero set-back seat-post. Why? Because they are lighter and make sense. The downtube has a flat top and bottom where OPEN has built in ultra-high modulus carbon for stiffness and seat tube is ribbed where is emerges from the bottom bracket. The seat stays are thin and flat to give vertically compliance though retaining lateral stiffness.
