Japan
Maurten is a sports fuel brand from Sweden. Its energy gels and drink mixes use patented Hydrogel Technology to encapsulate carbohydrates, with a short list of simple ingredients and no colourings, flavourings or preservatives.
CYCLISM has chosen Maurten to fuel road cyclists, from long rides to hill climbs and races. Further down this page you'll find a cycling fuel guide showing what to take, and when, for each type of ride.
It turns to gel in your stomach
At the core of every Maurten product is patented Hydrogel Technology. Carbohydrates are encapsulated in a hydrogel that carries them through the stomach to the intestines, a design that takes into account the stomach discomfort common during hard efforts.
Drink mixes stay a smooth liquid in your bottle and only form a gel when they meet stomach acid. The gels have a firm texture rather than a syrup, so you can swallow them without water.
Your bottle and your back pocket
On a road bike, fuel lives in two places: your bottle and your jersey's back pocket. Put drink mix in the bottle for fluid and carbohydrate, and gels in your pocket, and your fuelling stays simple.
Every product is measured in grams of carbohydrate, so combining them is easy. One bottle of Drink Mix 160 and one Gel 100 gives you 65g. Build up to your hourly target like blocks.

Cycling fuel guide
What to take, when, and how much, for each type of ride. It's based on Maurten's official Fuel Guides, using only the products CYCLISM stocks.
The basics are simple. For easy rides under 60 minutes, you generally don't need sports fuel. For longer or harder rides, aim for 30–90g of carbohydrate per hour. Needs vary with body size, sweat rate, temperature and intensity, so test your plan in training before using it in a race.

Training
30–70 minutes at a conversational pace. The intensity is low, so you generally don't need sports fuel. If it's been a while since your last meal, take a gel 15–30 minutes before you set off. Sip water on hot days.
Power steps up gradually until you can't hold it, giving an estimate of your FTP. No fuel during the main set, so start fully topped up from your pre-ride drink and warm-up gel.
or Gel 160 × 1
or Gel 100 × 1
3 × 15 minutes at 84–97% of FTP with 5 minutes' rest between. A long, demanding session that simulates a breakaway or time trial. Take one or two sips of drink mix in each rest.
or Gel 160 × 1
or Gel 100 × 1
or Drink Mix 320 × 1
6 × 3 minutes at 115–120% of FTP, or 4 × 5-minute blocks of 40 seconds at 120–130% of FTP with 20 seconds' rest. High-intensity work for responding to attacks. Sip drink mix between sets.
or Gel 160 × 1
or Gel 100 × 1
or Drink Mix 320 × 1
3 × 15-minute blocks, each repeating 60 seconds at 110% of FTP and 240 seconds at 95%, three times. Varied-pace climbing for mountain passes and hill climb races, and a good chance to practise your race-day fuelling.
or Gel 160 × 1
or Gel 100 × 1
or Drink Mix 320 × 1
Two sets of 4 × 10-second all-out sprints (5 minutes between sprints, 20 minutes between sets). The efforts are short and sharp, so no warm-up fuel is needed. Sip drink mix between sets.

Long rides & brevets
Weekend long rides and group rides. Build your fuelling around drink mix in your bottle, and top up with gels from your pocket. Drink more on hot or humid days.
30–60g per hourBrevets of 200km and beyond, or all-day rides. Prepare the day before and on the morning, then fuel steadily throughout. Gel 160 has 40g of carbohydrate per sachet, so you carry fewer sachets.

Drink Mix 160 × 1 + Gel 100 × 1 (65g)
Racing
Long stretches of high intensity call for more carbohydrate. Prepare with Drink Mix 320 the day before, then combine bottles and gels during the race. Keep a Gel 100 Caf 100 in your pocket for the decisive moments.
60–90g per hourDrink Mix 320 × 1 (78g)
Drink Mix 160 × 1 + Gel 100 Caf 100 × 1 + Gel 100 × 1 (90g)
Short, all-out hill climb races are mostly about preparation before the start. For races over 60 minutes, take one gel on the way up. If you want to save bottle weight, gel-based fuelling suits these races.

* This guide is a general starting point based on Maurten's official Fuel Guides, built with the products CYCLISM stocks. Needs and timing vary from rider to rider. Always try a new fuelling plan in training before using it in a race.
* Gel 100 Caf 100 contains caffeine. Sensitivity varies, so if you're new to caffeine, start with one gel and take care not to overdo it alongside coffee and other sources. Not recommended for people sensitive to caffeine, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or children.
FAQ
What's the difference between Gel 100 and Gel 160?
Both use the same hydrogel technology; the difference is the amount of carbohydrate. Gel 100 has 25g per sachet and Gel 160 has 40g, which suits long rides and brevets when you want to fuel less often.
Do I need water with the gels?
Maurten gels have a firm texture and can be swallowed without water. You still need to stay hydrated on the bike, so keep drinking water or drink mix as well.
My gel has turned white and hard. Is it OK?
Gels can turn white and harden after long exposure to heat, but there's nothing wrong with the ingredients. Avoid leaving them in a hot car, and store them indoors at 10–30°C.
